The average gabapentin dosage in these studies was 1800 mg/day. Additionally, a study of 50 people with cannabis use disorder found that 1200 mg of gabapentin per day helped improve sleeping problems, a symptom of cannabis withdrawal. I would not use Gabapentin off label for sleep. There’s much better meds for insomnia. I’m gabapentin lower dose for nerve issues at night (just nightly dose) and it’s sleep benefits dissipated quickly. I can take a larger dose to sleep but as an insomniac myself it only gives me “short sleep” as it cannot keep me asleep. I take Gabapentin for RLS and someone told me taking more than 600mg at once is pointless bc the body can’t absorb more than 600mg. So they say to take 600mg doses and space them out at least 3 hours. Is this accurate? Dosage Variability: Doses for sleep can differ based on individual needs, often ranging from 100 mg to 600 mg, taken before bedtime. Potential for Dependency: Caution is advised, as there is a risk for dependence and withdrawal symptoms associated with prolonged use of gabapentin. I've just been prescribed Gabapentin for pain and sleep and am very nervous about starting it. The doctor suggested a very low dose of 100mg to begin with but after reading up on it I'm wondering if I should even bother. I have joint pain (tested negative for RA and lupus) and some insomnia, but I also have lifelong depression and am aware that Gabapentin can contribute to suicidal thoughts 13 votes, 44 comments. Does anyone out there just take gabapentin just at night for insomnia/sleep? And if so how many mg do you take and how long Most studies show that gabapentin improves slow wave sleep (“deep sleep”) and total sleep time. Two small studies showed that gabapentin may help people with primary insomnia and occasional sleep disturbance improve total sleep time and wakefulness in the morning. Gabapentin and sleep General Advice I'm prescribed gabapentin 300mg at bedtime for sleep about 3 weeks ago. First started at 100mg the asked the doctor to increase due to ongoing insomnia. I still have some 100mg and have been taking it during the day for mild anxiety. The 100mg works so well calming me but the 300mg does not help me sleep. I read that it is taken typically at 1800mg divided in 3 doses daily for neuropatic pain. My plan would be to take 1 dose of 300mg before bed. At this dose there shouldn’t be much risk. We would like to show you a description here but the site won’t allow us. Doses go up to 2800mg (but that's because the effect as a function of dose is logarithmic, meaning the more you take, the less you get out of that increase of dose). Welcome to /r/gabapentin, here we primarily discuss issues pertaining to the medical, prescribed use of Gabapentin, Lyrica and Phenibut, as well as other Gaba related drugs. By taking gabapentin at this higher dosage, I believe, I suppressed my ANS from overreacting to sleep apnea events allowing me more restorative sleep. It's only been 3 days but the improvement is drastic from being a zombie. I've been given almost all non-benzo sleep aids (trazadone, remeron, lunesta, hydroxyzine etc) and gabapentin is the only one that really helped. Admittedly I take 300mg like 5hrs before bed and top off with two more doses later just for a nice relaxing evening. The dosage of Gabapentin prescribed by doctors to treat the sleep disorder insomnia and improve overall sleep quality is generally between 100-400 mg. The optimal use of gabapentin for sleep involves careful consideration of timing, dosage, and integration with good sleep hygiene practices. Typically, taking gabapentin 1-2 hours before bedtime allows for its sleep-promoting effects to align with the desired sleep onset. I've been taking between 100-300mg gabapentin as needed for sleep for about 4 months now. On the higher end of the dosage, I get decent sleep for about 6-7 hrs. I combine 100mg with weed sometimes and it works OK but not nearly as well as 300mg. No morning or daytime grogginess. Gabapentin looses its effectiveness for sleep. Tolerance is a thing with this as far as sleep goes, it still helps the reason i’m prescribed it for at night but it’s sleep effects diminishes. I can double my dose if i need to but rather keep my dose low. If you started at 100, 200, 300 and increasing it for sleep you’ll understand.
