Pregabalin (Lyrica) and gabapentin (Neurontin) are both approved to treat nerve pain. How are they different, and which one is preferred? Compare both meds here. Is Lyrica stronger than gabapentin? Not necessarily. Whether Lyrica or gabapentin works better for treating your condition or is “stronger” depends on a few factors. But because Lyrica is more potent, an older study used one-sixth of the Lyrica dose when converting from the gabapentin dose. For example, a dose of 50 mg per day of Lyrica would equal 300 mg per Considering the higher occurrence rates of euphoria among pregabalin users (relative to gabapentin users) and the stronger action of pregabalin on α2δ subunit-containing VDCCs (relative to gabapentin users), one would expect pregabalin (Lyrica) to exhibit greater abuse/addiction potential than gabapentin (Neurontin) when administered at Lyrica is absorbed faster and starts working more quickly than gabapentin. Lyrica reaches its peak concentrations within an hour of being taken, whereas it takes 3 to 4 hours for gabapentin to reach its peak concentration. Lyrica (pregablin) and gabapentin (Neurontin) are anti-epileptic medications used to treat seizures and nerve pain (neuropathic pain). Gabapentin is also used to treat nerve pain caused by shingles (herpes zoster). Pregabalin and Gabapentin are both anticonvulsants used for nerve pain & anxiety. Pregabalin is generally faster-acting and more potent than Gabapentin. Gabapentin is slowly absorbed (peak: 3 to 4 hours) and plasma concentrations have a non-linear relationship to increasing doses. Pregabalin has faster onset of action and greater potency. Gabapentin advantages over Pregabalin Gabapentin is less addictive than pregabalin 10. Unlike pregabalin, gabapentin is not scheduled as a controlled substance. In patients with chronic epilepsy treated for more than 3 years with 1,800 mg of gabapentin, 39% discontinued gabapentin owing to lack of efficacy (15). It is important to note that there are meta-analyses comparing the efficacy of pregabalin and gabapentin, although direct comparisons between the two drugs have not been conducted. From the minimal head-to-head studies we have, Lyrica (although potentially more expensive) does show stronger binding to receptors, leading to increased potency, and a better response for neuropathic pain than gabapentin. Lyrica potentially has fewer side effects than gabapentin and may be better tolerated as well. Pregabalin and gabapentin are often considered first-line treatments for various neuropathic pain syndromes, generally irrespective of cause. Studies indicate that both Lyrica (pregabalin) and Neurontin (gabapentin) are effective in treating nerve pain with no significant differences between them. However, one might be better for you than the other due to cost or side effects. Pregabalin has a higher potential for abuse and dependence compared to gabapentin, which is an important factor to consider, particularly in the context of the ongoing opioid epidemic and the need for responsible prescribing practices. Choosing between pregabalin and gabapentin When it comes to selecting between pregabalin and gabapentin as treatment options, healthcare providers must As such, pregabalin comes in lower strength than gabapentin. (See the Administration section below for more details comparing their strengths and dosages.) Another difference is that gabapentin has been around longer. The FDA initially approved gabapentin in 1993 as the brand Neurontin. Gabapentin and Lyrica treat nerve pain and seizures, but Lyrica works faster and is more potent. Both have side effects and risk of misuse or dependency. When you're comparing gabapentin versus Lyrica, you should consider the benefits and risks. Gabapentin is used to treat partial seizures that occur with epilepsy and nerve pain resulting from Lyrica is considered to be more potent than Gabapentin, meaning that lower doses of Lyrica may be required to achieve the same therapeutic effect. Additionally, Lyrica has a more predictable absorption rate and a longer half-life, allowing for less frequent dosing compared to Gabapentin. Lyrica has been shown to be more potent than gabapentin, is currently brand name only, and is a controlled substance. Because of the cost and similar mechanism of action, it may be appropriate to attempt gabapentin therapy instead of Lyrica in some patients. Compare Lyrica vs Neurontin head-to-head with other drugs for uses, ratings, cost, side effects and interactions.
