In 2014, Parkinson’s UK funded work to find out more about GABA and its links to dopamine. Today this research could see drugs that target GABA being repurposed for Parkinson’s. Gabapentinoids are drugs, including gabapentin and pregabalin, which are currently used to treat epilepsy, restless leg syndrome, and neuropathic pain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We administered gabapentin in a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover trial to 19 subjects with advanced parkinsonism.
